BIO 206: Ecology
Field exercises
Effects of competition, predation, and social behavior on
foraging success. (a.k.a. 'the macaroni lab')
- Students forage for macaroni with tweezeers inside quadrants
of various sizes and must compete with other foraging students
for macaroni noodles while being wary of human predators ("hawks")
in a simulation of competition and predation in nature. Further
explanaition of the lab can be found in the legends of the photos.

Sampling riverine communities in the Chester River
- Two river sites, a deep water channel and a shallow water
oyster bar, were sampled for fauna using an otter trawl. The
identity, abundance and biomass of each species captured was
noted for later analysis.

Marsh Transect
- A 200 m transect was run from the bay across a salt marsh
and into the adjacent forest at Horsehead Wildlife Center. Abiotic
parameters including soil moisture, pH, and temperature, as well
as water salinity and altitude realtive to se level at the time
(the area is tidal) were measured at 10 m interval. These abiotic
parameters were correlated with the abundance and type of plant
life along the transect.
